For many years, representatives of the civil society have come before this Council to denounce the prison sentences against Cuban patriots who were unjustly imprisoned for monitoring the actions of terrorist groups who promote aggressions against my country, recalled the diplomat.
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, Antonio Guerrero and René González were detained on September 12, 1998 in Miami and sentenced to long and severe prison terms, including life sentences.
In the case of Rene, after 13 years in jail, he was punished with a supervised liberty term and compelled to renounce to his U.S. citizenship if he wanted to stay in Cuba. He returned home in April, 2013.
In her speech before the Council of Human Rights, the Ambassador remembered the call of Rene to all Cubans to wear today yellow ribbons to send a symbolic message to the U.S. people and contributed to bring down the wall of silence built around this case in the United States.
“With our yellow ribbons we express the hope that sooner than later, we will embrace our five brothers in their homeland”, concluded the diplomat.
