Cuban anti-terrorist fighter and Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Rene Gonzalez Sehwerert, called on the Cuban people to stage a nation-wide campaign for the release of his four compatriots, who are serving unfair and extremely long sentences in US jails.
During a prime-time TV show on Wednesday, Gonzalez gave details about the campaign to demand the release from prison of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero, who along Gonzalez are internationally known as the Cuban Five.
The campaign, running till September 12, a date that marks 15 years since the Five were arrested in Miami, will send a message to the US people asking for their support in the struggle, said Gonzalez, who was accompanied by relatives of the anti-terrorist fighters and members of solidarity movements.
On Tuesday evening, Gonzalez made a TV appearance calling the people to tie yellow ribbons in public places, which is a sign of hope and encouragement for those who wait the return home of their beloved ones.
Interviews with Cuban citizens, which were aired during the program, revealed the strong support by the people of the initiative launched by Gonzalez.
Meanwhile, the coordinator of the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five, Graciela Ramirez, stressed the support of the struggle for the release of the heroes by several world personalities, such as Nobel Peace Laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel. She also explained about upcoming actions for the return home of the four heroes incarcerated in the United States.
