Diaz Canel: Cuba Opens New Chapter in EducationHAVANA, Cuba.- Cuban first vice-president Miguel Diaz-Canel said that with the current 2013-2014 school year, which aims at further increasing education quality, Cuba opens a new chapter in the history of education, as a basic principle of the Revolution.

The new process will also aim at the permanent preparation of teachers and professors, said Diaz-Canel, who presided over the ceremony held to mark the start of the new school year, at Havana Ciudad Escolar Libertad school complex.

Also present at the ceremony was the first secretary of the Communist Party in Havana Mercedes Lopez Acea and Education minister Ena Elsa Velazquez.

Speaking to reporters, Diaz-Canel said that the course will prioritize political and human development of the students, bearing in mind that it is not only a matter of training, but also of educating the new generations.

Despite economic limitations not allowing for better conditions at education centers, big efforts have been made to increase education quality, with the preparation of teachers and professors as the major factor, he noted.

During the revolutionary period in Cuba, Education has been inclusive and massive, which has bee an achievement, said Diaz-Canel though he stressed the need to rigor and discipline in each center.

The first Cuban vice-president also addressed emergent teacher training programs given the lack of skilled professionals over the past few years; he said that such teachers played an important role but not with the expected training quality.

Diaz-Canel said that the integral preparation of teachers is crucial to make the classrooms appear as the real expression of the country that Cubans want to build.
