Nurses Announce Strike, Students to March in Peru

Lima, Jul 18 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian state nurses will join on Thuersday a strike by doctors, in both cases over wage claims, while students announced a march to Lima on July 28. At the same time, the main labor union and the three national health unions are preparing a march to the capital regions that is conditional on the outcome of a dialogue on their claims agreed with President Ollanta Humala yesterday.

The Health Minister, Midori de Habich, called today to stop a strike by the Peruvian Medical Federation that affects hospitals and other government services, and assured that the salary improvements will begin in two months, which were already agreed in October after a strike of more than a month.

Leaders of the strikers, who held marches and rallies at various hospitals in Lima and other provinces, rejected the deadline requested by the minister and demanded the fulfillment of the agreement signed in October.

Meanwhile, the president of the Nurses Federation, Zoila Cotrina, said her union will join the strike Thursday, also due to the breach of a similar agreement signed by Habich.

On the other hand, the vice president of the Student Federation of Peru, Luis Duran, announced that students from provincesâÖ universities will also march to Lima on July 28.

They will protest against a new law they consider affects college autonomy and against budget cuts for state universities.
