Army Corps General Leopoldo Cintra Frias, Minister of the FAR, recognizes popular interest in Exercise Meteoro  2013

SANTA CLARA, Villa Clara. – The interest by the population in Meteoro 2013 Exercise, for the preparedness for major hurricanes and other extreme disaster events, was highlighted here by the Army Corps General Leopoldo Cintra Frias, Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, during the first day of Meteoro 2013 Exercise, when he participated in the analysis by the Civil Defence Council of this province, which pointed out the measures in each stage of disaster reduction and to mitigate the effects of these, from the experience of Hurricane Sandy.

The member of the Politburo referred likewise to the necessity to be well prepared for these situations and the understanding which the people who participate enthusiastically in the exercise have on the subject.

He talked of the need to transmit the experiences and lessons learned from previous events to the new leadership cadres, to implement measures to reduce the risks and even eliminate them if possible.

Cintra Frias recalled that when there is a change in personnel the facts of what has occurred will not always be reported in detail to the newcomers, and those experiences can be lost.

The FAR minister, who also visited Sancti Spiritus, stressed that he found in that province and in Villa Clara, a good job in carrying out the instructions given to this exercise by Army General Raul Castro, First Secretary of the Central Committee Party and President of the Councils of State and of Ministers.

Noting he appreciated that people are well prepared theoretically, he expressed confidence that they would carry this knowledge to the practical exercises effectively on Sunday, which are the most important.

Speaking at the meeting, Army Corps General Joaquin Quintas Sola, deputy minister of the FAR, stressed how through the annual plans that the territories have they can tailor a package that allows them to progressively reduce and even eliminate the risk of flooding.

Yudi Rodriguez Hernandez, member of the Provincial Civil Defence Council, explained the Meteoro development in the territory that is holding the practical exercises, from the experience of facing weather phenomena and analysis workshops after Hurricane Sandy, which caused major flooding in the province.

Also present were Major General Raul Rodriguez Lobaina, head of the Central Army and Jorgelina Pestano Mederos, vice president of the Provincial Defence Council.
