UN Highlights Cuba’s Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts

Havana, Oct 13 (RHC) United Nations´ Secretary General Ban Ki-moon highlighted Cuba´s disaster risk reduction and climate change efforts, and the role played in this sector by Cuban children.

The work undertaken by the Caribbean country in this regard is being imitated in other parts of the world, said a message by Ban spread at the UN on Thursday, in the context of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The document stresses Cuba´s successful efforts in mitigating the risks posed by floods and tropical storms, as well as investment actions to develop early warning systems, Prensa Latina Reported.

The commemoration of International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction is dedicated to the role played by children and youths in reducing such risks.

According to the UN some 100 million children are victims of disasters every year, while thousands of them die or are wounded in such phenomena.
