Cuba: Low Undernourishment in Hospitalized Patients

by AIN — last modified Sep 16, 2011 07:42 PM
The low level of malnourishment reported in hospitalized patients in Cuba is outstanding, said Professor Luis Garces, a nutritional expert from Havana’s Hermanos Ameijeiras hospital, during a lecture in Sancti Spiritus.

Garces is attending the National Workshop on Nutrition hosted in this central Cuban province since last Monday.

The 40% of patients admitted in secondary care institutions in the island has nutritional difficulties due to the diseases they suffer from. Nevertheless, in industrialized countries like Spain this index surpasses the 50%, noticed the doctor.

Experts consider that most of the diet-related problems in Cuba are associated with harmful food habits. They also affirm that nutrition is regarded as an essential fact in the treatment of many diseases.
