Colombian Guerrilla Leader’s Death Confirmed

BOGOTÁ, September 23.— The death of one of the main leaders of the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) Victor Julio Suares, also known as Jorge Briceno or Mono Jojoy, during an air raid of the Colombian Air Force, was confirmed today, reported Prensa Latina news agency.

The guerrilla leader was killed in the department of Meta, during an operative of the Army special troops, with the support of the Air Force.

The offensive against the insurgent group was planned at the Larandia military base, located in the department of Caqueta, and was carried out at Kilometer 26 of the municipality of La Julia, Meta.

Some 30 plains and 27 helicopters were used in the operation.

According to intelligence and military forces, the body of Mono Jojoy was identified but could not be recovered from the battlefield.

Other 20 guerrilla fighters died in the same action, according to EFE news agency.
Jorge Briceño or Mono Jojoy was born on February 5, 1953 in the department of Cundinamarca and joined the rebel force in the 1975.

He was the commander of the Eastern Bloc, head of military operations and a member of the FARC secretariat.
