No negotiations, only planning the departure of the coup government, affirms Zelaya

WASHINGTON, JULY 7. — The constitutional president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, today accepted the mediation of Costa Rican President Oscar Arias as a means of ending the de facto regime installed in that country after the June 28 coup d’état.

No negotiations, only planning the departure of the coup government, affirms Zelaya”We accept the mediation of Oscar Arias,” Zelaya stated at a press conference shortly after his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other officials from Barack Obama’s administration in Washington.

According to the Honduran President, this move is not a negotiation or an act of betrayal of the thousands of Hondurans who have taken to the streets to reject the coup and demand the return of the legitimate government.

“There are things that cannot be negotiated, such as the reestablishment of democracy and the return to power of the deposed president. The restoration of the government is not on the table, I will not betray the people that are in the streets,” he affirmed.
